Emergency contraception is simply a dose of one of the hormones contained in birth control pills that can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected sex, however it is most effective the earlier it is taken. Emergency contraception is not 100% effective and it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. Plan B is the most commonly prescribed emergency contraceptive, however in certain cases birth control pills can be used as emergency contraception (ask your medical provider before doing this, not every pill works, and different pills work at different dosages, taking the wrong dose not only will not work, but could be harmful).

It is confidential and may be free based on your health insurance. We can help you figure this out when you come in to the clinic. Talk to patient services during your visit or call them at 617.457.8140 if you have questions.
